Miniature Orchids By Steven A. Frowine. 2007. Timber Press, Portland. 384 color photographs. Hardcover. 264 pages. $29.95. Avai-able on line www.timberpress.com. This is a book that delivers much more than the simple title promises. For the inexperienced grower or anyone who wants a refresher to help them make better choices when buying new plants, this book is the answer. I enjoyed reading it from cover to cover and can heartily recommend it to every orchid grower. With energy costs and space restrictions limiting many orchid enthusiasts, the time is right for a book that details the many options available to the windowsill grower and those who grow under lights. The first chapter is full of good information about the basic necessities of light, humidity, air circulation and temperature. It offers helpful hints on summering orchids outdoors where possible and gives much specific information about the various possibilities for supplemental lighting. The sections on disease and pest control are easy to follow as are those on potting, correct watering and fertilizing. All the ideas come with a healthy dose of common sense, something that seems to be in short supply nowadays. Tables and boxed information are used whenever warranted and I found them most helpful.
